The Albury Wodonga Kart Club (AWKC) is a motorsport kart racing club located in the Albury Wodonga region. Our track and club facilities, known as the Sheathers Road Kart Complex are located in Wodonga, Victoria.
AWKC is affiliated with Karting Victoria (KV) and Karting Australia (KA). These governing bodies provide the necessary rules, regulations and support, to enable us to run our club and our race meetings in a professional and safe manner.
The Albury Wodonga Kart Club holds our Monthly Meetings at 7:30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Sheathers Road Kart Complex and via Zoom. All members are most welcome to attend the committee meeting to provide assistance and input to the club.
Our History
The Albury Wodonga Kart Club Inc. was formed on the 27th of May 1985 after a small committed group of karters saw the need for a local club. Four years passed with these founding members working with local authorities to find a venue as they willingly drove hours to satisfy their addiction.
Many sites were inspected but still no local track. As anyone will tell you, it is always darkest before dawn, so too was the birth of the track. When all seemed lost , the Wodonga Council and Albury Wodonga Development Corporation rallied to the rescue with a long lease for the current land.
The next three years saw much fund raising take place as $75,000 was generated the hard way via raffles and the like. A Gold medallion concept generated over $30,000 alone. A humble beginning for a great club.
The club opened the AWKC circuit at Sheathers Road and had it first club race meeting July 26th 1992. Membership Today the club has around 90 members. The average club day comprises approximately 50 competitors.
The AWKC has a commitment to ongoing education of all members who wish to seek it. Consequently we boast enough personnel to undertake any race day with all duties covered. It hasn’t always been easy but the AWKC has managed to have a solid number of members able to assist the running of club days and opens. The evidence was manifested in the level of competence shown in conducting the 1996 Victorian Open Championship, the 2015 Victorian State Cup and rounds of the Rotax Pro Tour in 2017 and 2019 and the Australian Kart Championship in 2018.
Our Patron – Brad Jones
As a V8 Supercar Driver and Team Owner, I recognise the importance of Karting in the overall development of a driver. I have seen many drivers over the years who started in Karting and have reached the highest level of Motorsport, both here in Australia and overseas.
Karting helps build your core driving and racing skills. While Karts are vastly different to a V8 Supercar, things you learn at this entry level of Motorsport are the foundation of a solid racing career.
From driving technique and chassis tuning, through to racing and decision-making skills, Karting is a fantastic proving ground. As a V8 Supercars Team Owner, we are always on the look out for the next superstar. Having a proven record in Karting always attracts our eye.
Karting is also a great way to get the whole family involved in motorsport, with a great family atmosphere, mixed with the raw emotion of competition. As patron of the Albury Wodonga Kart Club, I hope you will be able to join Macaulay and myself at the track.
Yours in racing,
Brad Jones
